Buying guide
How to choose a hockey stick
The right stick suits your height, your position and the way you like to play. Here’s how our fitters break it down — length, carbon, bow and weight.
Guides
Stick length & height guide
Stand the stick upright beside you — the top of the handle should reach your hip bone. Too long and you’ll struggle to control the ball low; too short and you’ll be hunched over it. Use the table as a starting point and we’ll confirm it in store.
| Stick Length | Player Height | Typical Age |
|---|---|---|
| 28 in | Up to 3ft 7in | 4–6 yrs |
| 30 in | 3ft 7in – 4ft | 6–8 yrs |
| 32–34 in | 4ft – 4ft 9in | 8–11 yrs |
| 36.5 in | 5ft 3in – 5ft 7in | Adult |
| 37.5 in | 5ft 7in – 6ft | Adult |
| 38.5 in | 6ft and above | Adult |
Carbon content explained
A stick’s carbon percentage sets its power and stiffness. More carbon hits harder but is less forgiving and transmits more vibration into the hands — match it to your level rather than buying the stiffest available.
- 0–30% carbon: soft and forgiving — ideal for beginners and juniors learning control.
- 40–70% carbon: the club and county all-rounder, balancing power with feel.
- 80–100% carbon: maximum power and stiffness for elite hitting and drag-flicking.
Bow profiles & positions
Bow is the curve along the shaft, and it shapes the skills the stick favours. A mid bow keeps the peak in the centre for balanced, all-round play and is the safe first choice. A low bow shifts the curve toward the head, making 3D skills, aerials and drag-flicks far easier — the pick for attacking and specialist players.
Defenders and beginners are usually best on a mid bow for control and tackling; forwards and flickers tend to graduate to a low bow as their skills develop.

Weight, grip & care
Sticks run from light (around 520g) for quick stickwork to heavy (around 580g) for power hitting — most players sit comfortably in the middle. Pop into the shop and we’ll let you feel the balance before you commit. After play, wipe the stick down, keep it out of car boots in the heat, and replace the grip once it glazes over for reliable control.

HELP & ADVICE
Hockey questions, answered
New range, same advice you can trust. Call or pop into the Silsden shop any time.
What length hockey stick do I need?
Stand the stick beside you — the top of the handle should reach roughly your hip bone. As a guide, players around 5ft 7in–6ft use a 37.5in stick, 5ft 3in–5ft 7in use a 36.5in, and juniors size down. If you carry the ball low and dribble a lot, a slightly shorter stick gives more control.
What carbon percentage should I buy?
What's the difference between a low bow and mid bow?
Bow is the curve along the shaft. A mid bow peaks in the centre — the all-rounder, great for beginners and balanced play. A low bow peaks nearer the head, making 3D skills, drag-flicks and aerials easier and suiting attacking players.
Can you help me choose a stick?
Absolutely. We weigh and balance sticks in store and talk you through length, bow and carbon so it suits your game. Goalkeeping kit is sized in person too — just come in or give us a call.
How big is the hockey range right now?
It’s brand new and deliberately small — we’ve started with a handful of different sticks, luggage and accessories but will continue to grow. We already have Goalie sticks and new bags coming soon.
The cricket shop that started it all.
Handmade from the finest English willow, used from the local park to the international arena, we have built a reputation of being one of the best. One of the first companies to introduce a range specifically for female cricketers the Valkyrie range has been used in the Big Bash, the Hundred and opened the batting in the test arena.
